Florida

  • Starting in 2022, the state of Florida's Bureau of Licensing has asked all education providers to implement course controls within their online content to ensure coursework is not rapidly skimmed through to access the final exam. In order to provide you as much autonomy within the course material, our system will implement a minimum 20% seat time within the course material prior to accessing the final exam. Example, an approved five hour course must be reviewed for at least one hour and all content viewed prior to accessing the final exam.
  • Florida insurance continuing education will require you to complete an Affidavit of Personal Responsibility as part of the final exam process. The affidavit is now completed online prior to taking the final exam.

Iowa

They cannot be anyone in the direct line of employ of the licensee, nor anyone with a financial interest in the exam result. This rule had been temporarily waived due to COVID-19, but as of 7/1/21 that waiver period has now ended.

Kansas

Kentucky

Minnesota

  • Courses approved for online learning will have material that may not be downloaded. Correspondence courses will have materials available as PDF and/or a physical textbook.

  • For Online interactive courses there is no proctor required. For Correspondence courses, this state requires a proctor. Correspondence courses will display that a proctor is required on the details page of the course and also upon entering the learning platform you will see "Proctor Required" on the bottom right of your navigation screen.
  • If required - Who May Proctor Your Exam: the exam must be proctored by a DISINTERESTED THIRD PARTY WITH NO CONFLICT OF INTEREST.

The proctor cannot be a friend, relative or co-worker of the licensee, nor anyone with a financial interest in the exam result.

Mississippi

  • Mississippi insurance continuing education requires a disinterested third party proctor (be present) during your final exam. "Disinterested third party" shall mean a licensed insurance producer, independent adjuster or public adjuster, or a person with no family or financial relationship to the student. The proctor must be over the age of 18 and cannot be a friend or relative nor anyone with a financial interest in the exam result. A co-worker may proctor the exam, but only if they are not above or below the licensee's line of supervision. .

Missouri

  • Montana requires a passing score of 70% or higher on the final exam.

New York

  • Exam is closed book.
  • Effective January 1, 2008, a licensee will no longer receive credit for any course previously completed for continuing education credit. Licensees must maintain records of completed continuing education courses and will be held responsible if a course is repeated.
  • Courses approved for Internet may not be downloaded.
  • Upon successful completion of this course you will be issued a Certificate of Course Completion. This document is necessary for your license renewal. Retain this document.

North Carolina

  • Licensees will receive credits only once for a course completed in the licensee's current compliance period regardless of the number of times the same course is taken.
  • The state of North Carolina requires intermittent security checks to validate the individual taking the course is the individual also taking the final exam.
  • The state of North Carolina requires providers to restrict access to the final exam until a student has completed the course material in its entirety.
  • North Carolina requires an electronic affidavit for online self-study courses. For correspondence courses (textbooks) students must submit BOTH an electronic and also a signed paper affidavit.

North Dakota

Ohio

  • Online course material may not be downloaded.

  • For all online and self-study courses there must be an exam which consists of a minimum of 10 exam questions per each hour of approved continuing education credit.
  • All exam questions are delivered in a four-alternative multiple choice format.
  • Payment is required prior to accessing course materials.
  • A provider shall prevent access to the course unit/chapter questions and final exam before the agent reviews the course materials in their entirety.
  • Student information will not be sold or distributed to any third party without prior written consent of the student. Taking the course shall not constitute consent.
  • An affidavit of personal responsibility must be completed prior to the processing of credits for continuing education. The affidavit is made available only after the course examination is successfully completed.

Oklahoma

  • Oklahoma insurance continuing education will require you to complete an Affidavit of Personal Responsibility as part of the exam process. *New!* The affidavit is now completed online as part of the final exam.

Oregon

  • Course material may not be downloaded.

  • Each agent must enroll for the course before having access to course material.
  • A student may not access the final exam prior to reviewing all course materials.
  • A review quiz is provided at the end of each chapter. The final exam may not be accessed until each review session has been successfully completed.
  • Oregon Administrative Rule 836-071-0225(1)(d) limits the number of hours a producer can complete per day to 8. You may NOT start and finish more than 8 hours of continuing education on the same day.
  • A course approved in part or in whole as correspondence requires a proctor to be present for the final exam. A correspondence course is any self-study course which includes printed materials as part of the program.
  • This state requires a monitor/proctor for self-study correspondence programs. A correspondence course is any self-study course which includes printed materials as part of the program.

Pennsylvania

  • The Pennsylvania Department of Insurance has waived their normal proctor requirement, until further notice. A proctor is no longer required. You will instead need to electronically sign an Affidavit of Personal Responsibility, and that affidavit will be completed online as part of your final exam.

Rhode Island

South Carolina

  • Effective May 27, 2022, producers may now apply for CE exemption if you are 65 years of age or older AND have 25 or more years of licensure. The online application is available on our website on the CE page.
  • Effective January 1, 2017, a valid personal and/or business email address is required by law. Please visit NIPR (https://pdb.nipr.com/my-nipr/frontend/identify-licensee) to update your email address. The Department will no longer be mailing hard copy renewal notices to licensees.
  • Effective January 2011, the deadline for biennially complying with continuing education and license renewal is the last day of the producer’s month of birth. Producers born in an odd numbered year must comply by the last day of the birth month in an odd numbered year. Producers born in an even numbered year must comply by the last day of the birth month in an even numbered year.
  • The CE hours must be completed prior to renewing the license on NIPR. You should allow at minimum 72 hours for your CE status to be updated before you will be able to renew your license. If you wait until the last day of your birth month to complete your CE, you will not be able to renew on time and will incur a late renewal penalty.
  • Producers must complete 24 hours of continuing education including a minimum of 3 hours of Ethics by the deadline before they can renew the license online at NIPR (www.nipr.com).
  • Multi-line (property and casualty and life, accident and health) producers must complete 24 hours of CE credits. A minimum of 8 credit hours must be completed in each line of authority and a minimum of 3 credit hours of Ethics.
  • Producers with reduced compliance requirements (15 hours) must complete 12 hours in the line of authority held and 3 hours of Ethics. Multi-line producers with reduced compliance requirements (15 hours) must complete 6 hours in each line of authority and 3 hours of ethics. Failure to comply by the last day of the producer’s birth month will result in the license being expired. The law allowing reduced CE compliance was repealed January 1, 2010. This Section applies only to those producers who were granted a reduced CE compliance prior to January 1, 2010.
  • Up to 18 CE hours in excess of the CE compliance period may be carried over and applied to the next compliance period; Ethics hours will not carryover.
  • South Carolina insurance continuing education requires an impartial third-party proctor be present during your final exam. The proctor must be at least 18 years of age and cannot be a friend, relative or co-worker of the licensee, nor anyone with a financial interest in the exam result.

South Dakota

  • During examinations and interactive inquiry periods, licensees may use course materials or personal notes, but may not use another person's notes, answers, or otherwise receive assistance in answering the questions from another person.
  • Effective September 1, 2015: For all licenses issued or renewing on and after September 1, 2015, which formerly required 30 hours of continuing education (CE) during each license period, only 24 hours of CE is now required for each license period. Remember that only half (1/2) of your credits may be completed in a self-study format!

US Virgin Islands

Virginia

  • Self-Study course material is approved as either online or correspondence. Online training is delivered through an internet based learning environment. Correspondence is delivered by a PDF/Textbook provided directly to the student upon enrollment. You must complete review of the course material before accessing the final exam.
  • Exam is closed book.
  • Agents cannot receive CE credit for a course taught in alternative formats (a classroom course, online course, video or audio conference, web-conference–based, etc.) if the curriculum is based on the same published materials; this rule applies to any variation of course types.
  • ONLY the Virginia Insurance License Number (VLN) or the National Producer Number (NPN) are permitted forms of student identification. Social Security Number, driver’s license number, and all other forms of personal identifiers are strictly prohibited.
  • Students are not permitted to complete more than eight credit hours per day. Any course exceeding 8 hours of credit must be completed with a start and end time which is greater than 24 hours apart.
  • Student Certification forms which are distributed during your completion of the course are to be submitted to our office no later than 7 days from the date you successfully complete your final exam. All online exams completed on this platform include your electronic certification as part of the exam process.
  • The state of Virginia requires providers of online training to restrict access to the final exam until a student has completed the course material in its entirety. To meet these requirements we have put in place a Course Material Verification code on single module online courses which can be found on the last page of your course materials. This code will be required prior to accessing the final exam. For courses which are correspondence, videos or multiple modules, you must review the entirety of the course before the start exam button will appear.

Washington
